The D-REC Initative and Energy Web join forces to help businesses reduce emissions with distributed renewable energy

The D-REC Initiative, co-led by Powertrust and South Pole, and the Energy Web Foundation (EWF) have worked together to develop a distributed renewable energy certification mechanism (D-REC) which gives businesses a way of purchasing renewable energy that can be accurately tracked to reduce emissions and monitor the progress of their scope 2 and 3 targets.

Prosus has committed to buy 3GWh of D-RECs from South Pole, between 2022 and 2025, delivering 1GWh per year. This transaction – one of the first of its kind – will provide much needed capital to help establish transformative renewable energy projects, which displace carbon intensive electricity and deliver access to energy to rural communities.
